Seminars for Students

'WHY NOT JUST WAIT'

For more than twenty years Peter Janetzki has been interacting with teens and young adults about Relationships and Sexuality. From these interactions and his counselling experience it is obvious that many people (not just teenagers) make some of the most important life decisions based on inaccurate information, ignorance, and myths promoted by popular culture.

A number of years ago some teachers from Redlands College at Wellington Point dialogued with Peter about the need for a broad based sexuality program that went beyond the ‘safe sex’ mantra of current sex education programs. This resulted in the development of ‘Why Not Just Wait’ a relationships and sexuality program covering all year levels of High School, co-presented by Peter Janetzki and Jessica Grounds (a secondary school teacher). Using a variety of media to include power point, video, pertinent illustrations, small groups and user friendly manuals in an interactive manner.

The standard program is outlined below, however programs can be modified to suit the individual needs of any school.

Year 8 - Puberty and Changes

Year 9 - Understanding Love, & Choosing Wisely, Conception, Pregnancy, Birth & Parenting, Contraception, The Saying No Strategy

Year 10 - Ingredients of Healthy & Unhealthy Relationships - Communication Skills, Conflict Resolution, Reasons Why Teens Begin Having Sex, Possible Consequences (STD’s/STI’s), Contraception Effectiveness, The MYTH of Safe Sex, Reasons for Abstinence.

Year 11 - What is Sexual Integrity, the Cost of Sexual Exploitation i.e. Pornography, Prostitution, Understanding and Responding to Sexual Harassment.

Year 12 - Sexual Theology & Beliefs, Holistic Sexual Beliefs, Understanding Male & Female Sex Drive, Thinking Smart & Making Choices.

Our Philosophy
Young people will do what young people want to do. Consequently we are up front about our values so as to not impose them on students but rather challenge them to examine what we have to offer and to make informed and wise choices.

Our Values
We believe that Sexuality is not a separate part of our experience in fact it is part of every aspect of life, therefore we approach it holistically and in the context of relationships. We believe that young people have the right to be given accurate information from sound and reliable research, free from hidden agendas. We believe that every choice has a consequence and that young people are able to make healthy, life giving choices given accurate and relevant information. We are Pro-abstinence for two reasons. Firstly, evidence world wide supports that this is the safe and healthy choice, and secondly our presenters hold to a Christian world view. We also believe that the best place for sexuality education is in a loving and supportive family and what we do is a compliment to this.

We can deliver to groups of any size and we can develop specialised programs distinctive to your needs.

The session consists of an overview of type theory as well as the application of a strategy that will help identify temperament type of others. It is designed to assist teachers and team leaders to better understand and manage those whom they work with.

Stress Management (& MBTI)
This program starts with a ‘Symptoms of Distress’ quiz as a way of assessing our level of stress individually. It then moves onto defining and understand stress as well as the physiology of stress with in our bodies. It also identifies and challenges participants to implement stress management strategies so that they live balanced lives. Stress alleviation and recovery are covered within the session. If participants have completed MBTI sessions than identifying and understanding how our individual type responds to stress, and using type theory to manage and alleviate stress can also be covered.

Behaviour Mindset (for School Staff)
This program starts with getting teachers to dream dreams then moves on to look at the mindsets that hinders dreams or makes them. It also acknowledges the limitations that teachers face but moves on to look at heroes and the mindset that they have which help them overcome perceived limitations. The session climaxes with the challenge that teachers can be heroes in the life of their students.

Interpersonal Communication
Healthy relationships, weather personal or professional, are dependent upon interpersonal communication skills. Many people function by the skills that they have caught through out life. However specific skills, process and theory of interpersonal relationships can be learnt and utilised to maximise relationship potential. We have a number of programs covering Johari’s Window, group process, active listening, conflict resolution, interviewing skills, triangulation, defensive behaviours and boundary setting. Once these skills are learnt they can be implemented immediately.

Conflict Resolution
All relationships involve some level of conflict at some time. The health of the relationship depends greatly upon our ability to conflict in such a way that enables us to reach a resolution and reconciliation. We have programs that ranging form anger management, and conflict resolution theory and strategies through to facilitating groups that have unresolved conflict.

Leadership Development
There is often much confusion between leadership and management. Unfortunately many organisations promote people who are good at their jobs into management roles without equipping them for the task. And those that are good at management often get promoted into leadership roles without consideration the difference between these roles. Exploring the difference of these roles and acquiring specific skills, strategies and process enables one to move from management to becoming an effective leader.

Sexuality and Relationship Education (for students & parents)
We have a number of programs catering for various age groups and developmental levels covering topics such as puberty, conception, pregnancy, birth, parenting, contraception, STD’s, ‘Safe Sex?’, abstinence, understanding and managing or sexuality. All our student programs are contextualised in a philosophy that is Holistic, relationship focused, believing that information not ignorance produces health, pro-abstinence, pro-choice (teaching them to think and to be responsible for their choices), seen as a starting point or compliment to what parents teach, and from a Christian perspective. Ideally we like programs to contain both sexuality input and skills for building lasting relationships.

We are also able to present programs that equip parents for the task of educating their children about sexuality and relationships.

Spiritual Formation
This program was specifically designed for a Christian School that wanted to understand and improve their role in the spiritual development of their students. Staff explored the process of evangelism (outreach) and stages of faith development (discipleship) using Fowler’s model (1981), then applied their insights to the context of a school and their role as teachers.
